The Crucible

The Crucible- Struggles in the Play Essay The Crucible- Struggles in the PlayThe Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a story that contains many struggles. These struggles come about as a result of the strict Puritan society in which the story takes place. There are two main struggles in the book. The first never actually takes place in the story, but is described many times throughout the first act and is the basis for the trials. It is Abigails and all the other girls need to be free and act like teenagers. The second is the result of the corruption of the trials. It is John Proctors fight to convince the townspeople that the accused women are not witches (especially his wife), and that it is Abigail who should be killed instead. In Puritan society, the role of the child is to be quiet, and stay out of the way. When Abigail is being considered a witch in the first moments of the story, Rev. Paris is very worried about how this will effect his image, and not of the fate of Abigail. We will write a custom essay on The Crucible- Struggles in the Play specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It is this society where Abigail feels the need to break loose and to act the way a teenager should: freely. This is the reason why she goes dancing in the forest. She is expressing her need to act her age and to break out of the restrictions of Puritan law. Her struggle is to do what she wants in a society that believes in ordering her around. It becomes obvious soon after the trials started that many people were going to be falsely accused by their neighbors as a method of revenge, and as an outlet for their maliciousness. When Abigail uses this case to attack Rebecca Nurse, one of the best Puritans in the Salem, John Proctor begins his efforts to stop the injustice. This increases when Elizabeth Proctor is tried and sentenced to death. This is John Proctors struggle. He must fight to save his wife, his community and eventually himself. In addition, he also has to convince the leaders of Salem that they are mistaken in believing in Abigail. Although Abigail and Proctor are mortal enemies, their struggles can be seen as almost identical. They both need to change the way the higherarchy of Salem is doing things. And also, both of them would just like to live normal lives (however, when Abigail realizes she cannot have this, she goes crazy by accusing everybody). This is shown when John Proctor breaks some of the harsher of the Puritan rule, and that he dislikes all of the speeches about damnation given by Rev. Paris. Unfortunately, the struggle of Abigail goes awry and results in many people dying, while the valiant efforts of John Proctor are unable to save Salem from one of the greatest tragedies in American history. The Crucible The Crucible- Injustice Essay In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, justice and injustice is portrayed through the characters of John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams. It is also shown through the minor characters of Mary Warren and Mercy Lewis, followers of Abigail Williams, and through Danforth and various townspeople. After Abigail Williams and the girls are discovered dancing in the forest by Reverend Parris, there are rumours of witchcraft among them, when Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam are found â€Å"witched†. Once the girls discover this, they become more and more frightened of being accused of witchcraft. Abigail is the first to â€Å"admit† to seeing the devil, and all the other girls join in, so the blame will not be placed on them. â€Å"I saw Sarah Good with the Devil. I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil. I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil.† Once the accusations began, many innocent people in the community were taken away. They were then either forced to admit that they were witches, to free themselves from a public hanging, or deny that they were witches, saving their integrity, but subjecting themselves to an unjust public hanging. One of the first people to be charged, was Rebecca Nurse, wife of Francis Nurse, a well-respected man of the community. This disturbance c aused great anxiety amongst the people in Salem, as they would have least suspected Rebecca Nurse to be one to deal with the Devil. â€Å"If Rebecca Nurse be tainted, then nothing’s left to stop the whole green world from burning.† Goody Putnam was the one to accuse her of witchcraft, for the death of her seven babies, but even with no just proof, Rebecca Nurse is hanged for â€Å"sending her spirit out on them.†Wild accusations are flying between people in Salem. In the case of Martha Corey, Walcott accused Corey of witchcraft, to settle a score that had happened four or five years ago. Walcott claimed that after buying a pig from Corey, it died soon after that and â€Å"from that day to this he cannot keep a pig alive for more than four weeks.†Giles Corey, Martha Corey’s husband, was later killed for a different reason. He refused to give the name of a man who heard Putnam say he was â€Å"killing his neighbours for their land.† Giles Core y died an unjust death, great stones placed on his chest, pressing him slowly to death. We will write a custom essay on The Crucible- Injustice specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Any outrageous claims were taken in by the courts, and everyone had a reason to accuse another, resulting in many innocent deaths. The main accuser, Abigail Williams, had an ulterior motive to destroy Elizabeth Proctor. Beforehand, Abigail had an affair with Elizabeth’s husband, John Proctor, and Abigail believed if she removed Elizabeth, she would have John to herself. Most of Abigail’s allegations were based on false claims, believing the relationship between her and John Proctor to be true love. Because of Abigail’s twisted plot of sticking a needle in herself to signify Elizabeth’s â€Å"familiar spirit† pushing it in, and Cheever finding a poppet in the Proctor’s house, Elizabeth is charged with murder. Proctor realises what Abigail is trying to do, and feels remorse, as he is partly at fault for his relationship with Abigail. â€Å"I’ll not give my wife to vengeance.† At the trial, Proctor no longer tried to protect himself and admits to having an affair with Abigail, explains Abigail’s plan to destroy Elizabeth for revenge. Elizabeth is called in to secure these claims, but does not admit to John being an adulterer, to save his reputation and to protect him. â€Å"Elizabeth, I have confessed it.†Mary Warren, a follower of Abigail Williams and John Proctor’s servant, wanted to confess to the court, the falseness and injustice of the whole incident, the girls imagination running wild, just to save themselves fr om being convicted of witchcraft, themselves. John Proctor learns this truth, and forces Mary to confess, to give justice to the rest of the community. The girls are given a chance to defend themselves against the claim that they were only acting. To prove their innocence, Abigail leads them to act as if Mary Warren had send her spirit in the form of a yellow bird up on the rafters. The girls’ hysterics, causes Mary Warren to break her barrier, and falls to Abigail’s pressure. Mary Warren then lets injustice prevail by accusing John Proctor to be â€Å"the Devil’s man† and her word is believed. Because of Mary’s inability to speak the truth, Proctor is taken away. The court of Salem, was a mockery of the court system, as the court people wanted convictions that suited them. There is a crucial flaw in the court system, when Danforth claims that â€Å"witchcraft is ipso facto, on its face and by its nature, an invisible crime†¦.we must rely upo n her victims-and they do testify..† He suggests that there is no visible evidence, so they must rely on the word of the witnesses along. But he cannot tell if he has unreliable sources or not, but prefers to believe the word of Abigail and the girls, over any other members of the community. When Mary Warren and John Proctor challenge the court proceedings, by Mary admitting that the information that Abigail and the girls are giving are false, the court is hardly convinced. But later when Mary turns her back and accuses John of witchcraft, the court immediately takes this information aboard, and John is taken away. Also, when Elizabeth does not confess to John being an adulterer, this testimony is used to great extent, so to the court people they believe that John was undoubtedly lying. The members of the court bases its judgements on what they want to hear, resulting in many of the accused, dying in an innocent, unjust manner. .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .postImageUrl , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:hover , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:visited , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:active { border:0!important; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:active , .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0 .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u07518a180d1d90759fdaa0bf9f88eac0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Christian Elements In Beowulf EssayWhen Proctor â€Å"confesses† to dealing with witchcraft, to save his life, after being told that it would be a public notice, he rips up the confession, as he knows his reputation will be destroyed among people who had respected him. But what matters most is that Proctor would have lost his self-respect, if he had let this lie, take its course. Proctor’s name meant more than his reputation, as it was all he had left after the consequences of dealing with Abigail. â€Å"Because I lie and sign myself to lies! I have give you my soul; leave me my name!† He knew that he could not deal with being seen as a witch in the ey es of the community, and preferred to keep the honour of his name, his loyalty to himself and most of all, his personal integrity. Elizabeth Proctor realised the meaning of his name to him, realising that his name was all he had left to keep him whole. â€Å"He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!†The Crucible mocks the way society deals with justice. Salem is torn apart, due to the extent of Abigail’s imagination and power. It shows the bias of opinions, as it was shown in the court, and how people tend to choose outcomes that suit them. In the end, injustice thrived upon the souls of the community, leaving many innocent people dead. Justice did not prevail, as the heart behind the case, John Proctor preferred to keep his self-respect and integrity, than live a life of lies. English Essays The Crucible The Crucible- Act Four Essay The scene in Act Four of The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, defines the characterization, themes, and conflicts of the play. The scene takes place in a court dungeon where John Proctor, is confronted by his wife Elizabeth for the first time in many months. The couple is imprisoned on having been falsely convicted of practicing witchcraft. While Elizabeth has been held with the rest of the members of the community, John has been isolated in a dark, dingy, dungeon. He is to be hung for his â€Å"crimes† the very next morning. The court officials send Elizabeth in to convince John to confess in writing that he accusations against him are true and that the verdict is just. The conversation that takes place between Proctor and Elizabeth is â€Å"above sorrow, beyond it. † They are bewildered by the hatred against them. They know they have done nothing, and are falsely accused. Yet, even with the glum atmosphere created by the conversation, the reader detects a glimmer of optimism, determination, and hope in Proctor’s voice. We will write a custom essay on The Crucible- Act Four specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The reader feels that he will fight till the end. â€Å"It is hard to give a lie to dogs. , he says. Proctor continually wavers in his decision whether to confess to this utright lie, or to spite the evil and be hung in martyrdom. Up to this point in time, the court officials have no definitive proof that any witchcraft has actually been practiced. Innocent people are being hung only on account of the testimony given by one young girl. Proctor realizes that by confessing, he will mar the memory of the many who have thus far been killed without confirming the false accusations. These dead would not sign their names falsely just to spare their own life. How could Proctor disrespect the cause that these dead gave their lives for, just to spare himself? Throughout the scene, Elizabeth struggles to let John be the one to decide whether he should spite the court or save his own life. She never provides a definite answer and seems to be in turmoil. Elizabeth states, â€Å"I want you living, John. That’s sure. † Yet, when John asks her whether he should confess so that his life will be saved, she responds, â€Å"Do what you will. But let none be your judge. There be no higher judge under Heaven than Proctor is! Forgive me, forgive me, John–I never knew such goodness in the world! In this scene Elizabeth tells John the story of Giles’ death. Giles would not answer aye or nay to his indictment so that the court would not be allowed to auction off his property. This allows his sons to inherit his property upon his death. The court pressed large stones onto his body to force a confession, yet he would not answer and was killed by the weight of the stones. This shows that we can not submit to the injustice that can be brought about in American society. It also portrays that these people who were wrongly put to death, unselfishly never thought of themselves, only of others. Giles chose a torturous, painful death rather than a sudden, struggle free death so that his family could be well. This scene epitomizes the messages and ideas that Miller tries to portray in his writing of the play. The conversation between John Proctor and Elizabeth exhibits the confusion, suffering, despair, determination, and hope of the victims convicted in this terrible tragedy. Also, the story of Giles portrays the goodness and selflessness of these martyrs. It is for these reasons that this scene is the most compelling and instrumental to the plot, themes, and characters.

The Pursuit for Preservation - Environmental Paper

The Pursuit for Preservation - Environmental Paper The Pursuit for PreservationSome sixty-five million years ago, just after the demise of the dinosaurs, a small rat-like species of mammal (now known as a prosimian) left the ground and took to life in the trees. Eventually after fifty million years had passed, this creature returned to the ground as the ancestor of man. The period spent in the environment of the trees was of great formative importance because it promoted many physical changes. These changes included a massive increase in body size, the development of paws into hands and 3D color vision. (Clifford) The physical changes were mapped by an increase in the size and the capability of the brain. Thus, prosimian developed into simian. (Oklahomawebdesign.com) The increase in stature led to changes in posture which enabled some simians to stand upright. Eventually one of these species was able to walk on two legs. It was these changes that led to the descent from the trees and eventually to homo sapiens; therefore, it can be s een that without trees the evolution of prosimian into man would never have taken place.Dawn O’NeilWithout trees we would not be here. (O'Neil)The development of human civilization has been dependent on wood-based technologies. Where would we be without the discovery of fire, agriculture, the wheel, the use of metals, spinning, weaving, water and land based transport, building, and printing? Our technological culture could not have developed without wood. How has this situation come about? In part it is because in developing into an organism that has had great evolutionary success the tree has created a material with many useful properties. At the same time, because trees have been so successful in colonizing large areas of the surface of the world, they now find themselves in competition for living space with a...

Definition and Examples of an Anecdote

Definition and Examples of an Anecdote An anecdote is a brief narrative, a short account of an interesting or amusing incident usually intended to illustrate or support some point in an essay, article, or chapter of a book. Compare this to other literary terms, such as parable- where the whole story is a metaphor- and   vignette  (a brief descriptive story or account).  The terms adjective form is  anecdotal.   In  The Healing Heart: Antidotes to Panic and Helplessness, Norman Cousins wrote, The writer makes his living by  anecdotes. He searches them out and carves them as the raw materials of his profession. No hunter stalking his prey is more alert to the presence of his quarry than a writer looking for small incidents that cast a strong light on human behavior. Examples Consider the use of an anecdote to illustrate something like the literary version of a picture is worth a thousand words. For example, use anecdotes to show a persons character or state of mind: Albert Einstein:  There was something elusively whimsical about Einstein. It is illustrated by my favorite  anecdote  about him. In his first year in Princeton, on Christmas Eve, so the story goes, some children sang carols outside his house. Having finished, they knocked on his door and explained they were collecting money to buy Christmas presents. Einstein listened, then said, Wait a moment. He put on his scarf and overcoat and took his violin from its case. Then, joining the children as they went from door to door, he accompanied their singing of Silent Night on his violin.(Banesh Hoffman, My Friend, Albert Einstein.  Readers Digest, January 1968)Ralph Waldo Emerson:  In [Ralph Waldo] Emersons later years his memory began increasingly to fail. He used to refer to it as his naughty memory when it let him down. He would forget the names of things, and have to refer to them in a   circumlocutory  way, saying, for instance, the implement that cultivates the soil for plo w.(Reported in Clifton Fadiman, ed., The Little, Brown Book of Anecdotes, 1985) Brainstorm to Choose the Right Anecdote First, consider what you want to illustrate. Why do you want to use an anecdote in the story? Knowing this should help brainstorm the story to choose. Then make a list of random ideas. Just free-flow the thoughts onto the page. Examine your list. Will any be easy to present in clear and concise enough manner? Then sketch out the basics of the possible anecdote. Will it do the job? Will it bring extra layers of evidence or meaning to the point youre trying to convey? If so, develop it further. Set the scene and describe what happened. Dont get too long-winded with it, because youre just using this as an illustration to your larger idea. Transition to your main point, and hearken back to the anecdote where needed for emphasis. Anecdotal Evidence The expression  anecdotal evidence  refers to the use of particular instances or concrete  examples  to support a general  claim. Such information (sometimes referred to pejoratively as hearsay) may be compelling but does not, in itself, provide  proof. A person may have anecdotal evidence that going out in the cold with wet hair makes him or her sick, but correlation is not the same as causation.

Structure of the DNA and RNA Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Structure of the DNA and RNA - Essay Example From the discussion it is clear that  the DNA sequence is composed of four types of DNA which are adenine A and Guanine G, Thymine T and Cytosine C.  A sugar known as 2’-deoxy ribose is phosphorylated at its 5’hydroxyl group and free nucleotides have phosphates representing the mono-, di-, or triphosphate form of the nucleotide known as dGTP, dATP, dTTP and dCTP.  This paper highlights that DNA does not exist in a single strand since it is not stable; it links with a second strand and intertwines to form a double helix structure. The bases are bonded to each other at the centre in a particular way whereby Adenine bond with thymine with 2H-bonds and Cytosine bond with Guanine with 3H-bonds. The linear geometry and rigidity of the H-bonds prevents the base pair formation since the plane lies perpendicular to the axis of the helix. Watson and Crick described the B-DNA as the physiological form of the double helix DNA. The sequence of bases in the polymer encodes the genetic information for protein synthesis. The real structure of the DNA, however, deviates slightly from the B form in a sequence dependent manner as well as depending on the interaction with DNA-binding proteins.  A double helix has the minor and major grooves winding along the helix surface. In those grooves, parts of the ring structures of the purines and pyrimidines are exposed to the surface of the helix this is the site where most protein-DNA interactions occur.

The Role in Informatics in Decreasing Health Disparities Essay

The Role in Informatics in Decreasing Health Disparities - Essay Example 2). In addition, health disparities are the result of poverty, environmental threats, inadequate access to health care, individual and behavioral factors as well as educational inequalities (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011, para. 2). The healthcare provider also causes these disparities. This is to mean that; some healthcare providers and specialists treat racial and ethnic minorities as lesser humans as compared to their frequent clients. This leads to the minorities seeking alternative healthcare in lowly performing hospitals and clinics. It, also, leads to minority groups seeking medical attention from medical institutions that are understaffed, and have lesser budgets to cater to needs of their patients, as well as lack of specialized, technical support. Culture and language also inhibit access to healthcare. This is in regard to the fact and the possibility that they may not be in a position to speak and understand the language used in healthcare facilities in a given area. As a result, there is poor communication and the minorities end up suffering the consequences of their ailments. Language barrier is the outcome of lack of interpreters and bilingual staff as well as lack of adequate funds for language services. Disparities in healthcare are also caused by the socioeconomic status of the individuals. Individuals with more income, better quality education and occupational status, have better health status as compared those who lack the above. Socioeconomic status steps in reference to life expectancy, access to health facilities and lifestyles. Lifestyle diseases, such as obesity and ailments from smoking, are more common in individuals who only have a high school education. Healthcare disparities can be as a result of geographical disparities, as well. This is as in cases where certain populations, minority, live outside metropolitan areas because they are poor. Recent research by shows that healthcare is delivered locally (to populatio ns who are within reach), and thus those outside the metropolis are not able to access it. The effects of geographic locations were explained by a study on revascularization procedures where certain neighborhoods had fewer cases (Frist, 2005, para. 9). These neighborhoods were inhabited by minority groups of blacks and Hispanics. Ethnically and racially, health disparities have been found in six main areas: infant mortality, cancer screening and management, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, immunizations and infections of HIV and AIDS (Office of Minority Health & Health Disparities, 2009, para. 5). Infant mortality refers to cases where children die before the age of five years and is a common disparity in regard to health. Cancer screening has its share of disparities when it comes to treatment of parties suffering from the condition. This is specially so ethnically and racially as more African-American minorities suffer and die from it as compared to those from other races and et hnic groups. In cardiovascular diseases, despite being a leading killer among all races and ethnicities, they are more common among black minorities. With this more African-Americans die from heart conditions than whites. A report on diabetes, conducted by The Centre for Disease

War in Iraq on the US economy Essay Example for Free

War in Iraq on the US economy Essay The United States’ minding the business of Iraq has been classified as a good deed by some people especially the people of Kuwait. Here Iraq invaded Kuwait to annex it as one of its provinces under the leadership of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. However, some quarters feel that this is an invasion into the private affairs of Iraq. One article called the United States under George Bush as the Pentagon Zionists. They both claim that the uninvited meddling of the internal affairs of Iraq has precipitated into weakening of the United States Economy as well as the other countries that have aided them in the war against Iraq. The weakening of the economy has been characterized as the skyrocketing world oil prices caused by the war on Iraq. Likewise, the war in Iraq has been characterized by too much money funneled out of the United States economy and into the war in Iraq. For, it costs money to buy the war planes, war boats, war ammunitions, the hiring of soldiers to go into Iraq and other military operating expenses (Petras, 2005) . Likewise, the United States war on Iraq has similar characteristics with the war it has fought in the prior years such as the Korean War, the Civil War, World War I and World War II. Meaning, the United States’ entry into the warpath shows how a well oiled war machine and ideology based coherent and monetarily blessed few with their highly placed thinkers in the highest policy making organizations of the state can bend official government policy to favor the needs of the foreign power over and against recognized economic interests (Ibid). Further, the oppositionists to the United States’ meddling insists that the generalized invasion of Iraq by the American Zionists against an Arab State and its citizens. The reason for the Iraq Invasion was because the United States wanted to help the Jews of Israel to expand their borders well inside the Palestinian state. For, there is an open agreement between the United States and Israel to push their Zionist influence well into Arab territories. This was code named A Middle East Common Market plan. This was the basic formula adopted for a permanent war in the Middle East. The oppositionists believe that the Zionist want to install their philosophy of free market and democracy. This formula was thought to be heartily embraced by both the liberal and the conservative politicians in the United States thereby depriving the Iraqi people their right to basic democratic rights as well as their own domestic markets(Ibid). Introductorily, some quarters believe that the United States continues to increase their daily losses from money and casualties together with their coalition partner countries with their continued involvement in the Iraq territory’s internal affairs. Some quarters believe that many of the war partners of the United States have already gone home to their own countries leaving the United States and its closest friends behind in Iraq. For the enemies of the United States believe that there are a few Zionists running the government and influencing it to wage war against Iraq. Some quarters believe that the continued presence of the American Forces in Iraq is one of the major forces that caused the devaluation of the United States dollar. Consequently, many of the people inside and outside the United States wants to put an end to the Iraq war by rallying being their message to the United States government to bring back home their sons, fathers, brothers, cousins, neighbors, friends and the like from the war torn district of Iraq. For, many members of the United States military feel that of the disillusionment that the war on Iraq has brought to the soldiers of the United States and their allies from a couple of countries as well as the civilian populations in those countries. The most vocal of which is France who staunchly rallied behind a no –invasion of Iraq policy in the United Nations. The few people in the United States government were so good at selling their plan to send military troops into Iraq (Ibid). In terms of macroeconomics, the United States admittedly suffered large casualties in Iraq and the war debt generated by the United States from their uninvited adventures into Iraq has been growing by an average amount of billions of United States dollars per day. Some quarters believe that the few Zionist people in the United States government were instrumental enough to poison the other members of the government to almost cut their ambassadorial relationship with France and the other European nations that were steadfast in their decision not to interfere with the internal affairs of Iraq. Economically, the main purpose of the United States’ trespassing into Iraq’s territorial jurisdiction was to ensure that the United States would control the privatization as well as the denationalization of the Iraq oil industry. Another goal of the United States’ invasion of Iraq and the removal from power of Saddam Hussein was to decapitate the current European benefits that came from the reconstruction of Iraq not to mention the United States’ plans to give Israel an added advantage in the Middle East. Indeed, the United States’ open stand that it wants to control the world has its consequence of continuous invasions into other countries to expand its empire. Many military think tanks believe that the United States did not take into account the large scale destruction of the assets located in Iraq by peppering some historic buildings with guided missiles and other explosive materials. Likewise, the cost of starting and maintaining a war needs lots of money. This causes the United States money to literally bleed. In addition, the Unites States gives out one of its famous lines that in order to maintain a living space, the maintenance of the controlling presence of the soldiers, politicians and ideologically biased individuals or groups. For, the United States Zionists believe that in order to maintain a peaceful environment to live in, the United States must literary have absolute supreme sovereignty and control. The purpose of this paper is to show that the United States’ decision to pierce the veil of privacy of Iraq by uninvitingly pushing the aircraft missiles’ button was because the United States felt that it had a right to control the oil fields of Iraq. Meaning, there was already a harmonious relationship between United States multinationals in the Petroleum industry and the oil companies in Iraq before the war. Thus, the United States and its few allies ventured into Iraq without thinking beforehand of the large amounts of cash outflows involved in a long protracted war between the United States and Iraq. Also, the attack of Iraq was fueled the ground zero event where many people died. The ground zero event in New York represents people who died when three commercial airplanes were hijacked and rammed into the White house and the twin towers were brought down to ground zero level (rubble).

Using Language to Describe Allegorical Figures Essay -- John Milton Ed

Using Language to Describe Allegorical Figures Milton and Spenser are both describing awful situations in their relative poems, Milton concentrating on an empty existence, filled with gloom and despair; in fact the very description is of gloom and despair, whilst Milton is describing an encounter with the gates of hell itself, and indeed two terrible creatures, causing an atmosphere of pure and utter evil flocculated with horror. Milton's language suggests ultimate evil, words that over centuries have been distorted to lessen their original dramatic meaning. We casually use words like "terrible," when describing the weather. In Milton's poem, words like "terrible" exist; to talk about unimaginable terror filled situations. When Milton uses the phrase "terrible as hell," he is saying it is so terrible; it is beyond any humans' comprehension. To create horror, Milton uses dark words to build up evil imagery, e.g. "fierce as ten furies, terrible as hell." Using these extreme adjectives consecutively, it is as if we can picture the beast growing as the description continues. Another thing that helps illustrate the mental picture of the scene is the introduction of shadow and darkness: "Black it stood as night." This darkness also adds to Milton's description of the shapeless blob-like figure. Shapeless blob does not do Milton's description justice. It is a dark, evil figure, both striding and gliding towards you, almost as if it has no fixed shape and thus could envelop you entirely. The uncertainty regarding whether it is gas like shadow or gooey substance also increases the fear, the unknown, and the unimaginable. Milton uses many evil comparisons and similes, so, should the adjectives fail to gi... ...egard to the man, Spenser tries to emphasize everything about him is low status. In Spenser's mind, the man is dirty, in the extreme sense of the word. Spenser portrays this when he says "low sitting on the ground" This also shows Spenser associates this figure with being low, soulless bound to the ground forever. He has "greesie locks," which is "long growen an unbound"; which put together means the man is extremely filthy and unhygienic, as he has not washed, cleaned or groomed himself. Spenser ends describing a dead person, bringing new filth and hopeless despair into the atmosphere. The "drearie coarse," which was "all wallowed in his own yet luke-warme blood," the thought of the "rusty," knife, is also disgusting, because the rust would cause a heavy infection should the victim recover causing even more suffering; no chance for recovery, despair.

Response to the book “The Body’s Memory” Essay

The recollection made by a person with disability or PWD of the most painful things which her body felt and experienced was explicitly depicted in the 1993 book of Jean Stewart entitled â€Å"The Body’s Memory. † The most notable aside from the clear presentation of the true condition and emotions of PWD, however, is the remarkable realization exemplified by the character. The character’s clear yet flexible and uncomplaining reminiscence of the pains and sacrifices of her body which was afflicted and removed with tumor was the ultimate significance of the book. This is because a PWD’s acceptance of the undeniable or irreversible state of her body strongly manifests that indeed the physical condition serves as the lasting reminder of disability. However, it is the will and the desire to overcome such disability which will ultimately allow a PWD to continue living. Stewart’s first appearance in the literary world showcased the character of a 30-year-old woman named Kate Meredith who recounted her body’s management and survival three years after a tumor was removed from her hip. Through the course of the recollection, Meredith’s body was faced with and most importantly reminded of its inevitable limitations resulting from the surgery which eventually made her a disabled person for the rest of her life (Stewart, 1989). The preface alone already hinted both the disposition and worth of this journal of one’s battle against her disability and ultimate triumph over the physical condition. As the journal went on, the author’s invitation led the readers into the painful yet struggling efforts of a lively and strong-willed English professor Meredith (Stewart, 1989). Through the words of the author, the readers came in contact and had a peek of the kind of life that Meredith has lived following her tumor removal. Stewart allowed the public to be acquainted with the people around Meredith, to feel and sympathize with her physical and emotional sufferings and above all, witness her understanding or acceptance and eventual rise above her permanent physical condition (Stewart, 1989). It is worthy to consider that the author has effectively presented the strong character of Meredith whose memory or precise account of her body’s pain caused by disability surprisingly paved the way for the meeting of two worlds, that of the normal people and persons with disability. In order to thoroughly feel the personal battle fought by Meredith, the author’s use of the journal type as the writing structure has succeeded for the character to vividly recall the pains suffered by her body. Additionally, the said literary form has efficiently conveyed the essence of the story, which is the acceptance of the body’s memory of disability suffering as well as the eventual realization of the existing disability and improvement towards the reality of living independently. The Meredith journal, as written by Stewart, is a concrete proof of a triumphant tale of a PWD whose body will definitely always remember the pain. However, she used such memory as a tool to overcome her limitation and started living on her own. The book is an ideal chronicle from the point of view of a previously normal person who was faced with the reality of never to walk once more. It is one of the best works that depicted a different perspective about the everyday happenings in the life of a person with disability. Utilizing the vehicle of journal writing, the author invited the readers to the world of a PWD and succeeded in making both her main character and the public experience all the emotional confusions, physical battle, disappointments, bravery, apprehension, self-pity and rejection. In doing so, Meredith’s eventual realization of herself and her new-found liberty has turned the book into a remarkable literary work. An ultimate response to the book is that it is a well recommended story for both normal people and persons with disability because of its generalized reminder that life has to continue beyond the event of a disability. How to reduce absenteeism in organisations 1. Identify the causes for an employee’s absenteeism. Free Essays on The People Of La Chambdon

I found the essay â€Å"From Cruelty to Goodness† written by Philip Hallie, to be remarkable. He states that ethics to him is personal and that it involves many different components. In the beginning he dwelled on the negative parts of ethics and ways in which cruelty could be stopped from happening. Hallie wanted to understand what cruelty was and why do people allow it to happen to them instead of running away from it. He felt that dignity was to blame for the way people react towards cruelty even when it’s done purposely. According to Hallie â€Å" the majority and the weakness of a minority were at the center of the institutional cruelty of slavery and of Nazi anti-Semitism†. The cruelty that Jews and blacks went through was both physical and verbal. Hallie also believed that if one tried to defend them selves eventually the cruelty would become less. â€Å"It would have to be either the victim getting stronger or the victimizer getting their way† in the end. The point of view that matters more is the victims and not the victimizer because they are unaware of the pain they inflict. A victim never forgets what happened to them and the people that help them to survive. Personal freedom is the right of having a choice and how one gets to express their feelings or desires through one’s actions without being judged by the norms of society. The people of Le Chambon did what they felt was right at the time despite the consequences. This essay pointed out to me that no matter what we encounter we always have choices. The situation is what we make of it, and it depends on how we handle it. In reality there is no justice when it comes to cruelty and goodness it’s just one or the other.... Choose 2 questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Choose 2 questions - Essay Example This owes to the fact that once such multinational companies are established, they assist in alleviating the living standards of the local people. Some of the multinationals, which have transformed the lives of the people according to the proponents of globalization, include the Apple Inc. and the Coca Cola Company. For instance, the former company has majority of its operations in China. This is owing to the fact that this country offers experienced and cheap labor for such multinational companies. The proponents of multinationals also believe that this is the only way to promote the spirit of globalization. With the market being free, every individual has the right to conduct his business in any country, provided all conditions are right. In short, therefore, the proponents of the multinational corporations focus on the macro level (systemic) analysis of this situation. On the other hand, though, the critics of multinational corporations have a different view on this issue. This is because they focus on it from a sub systemic level of analysis. For instance, the multinationals have been criticized for being the main cause of unemployment in some developing countries. This is despite the fact that the proponents indicate otherwise. For instance, once a multinational corporation is established in a developing country, it threatens the infant industries. The latter may not be in a position to cope with the completion of such large multinational corporations. For that reason, some of the local industries are forced to shut down mostly due to reduced sales. This results to an increased unemployment as people loss jobs. The critics indicate that one of the main advantages of the multinational companies is that they are able to operate on a large scale than the local industries. They have capital and therefore have the ability to ensure that there is the right kind of technology and qualified working force to provide quality goods and services. According to the crit ics, the multinational companies are out to perpetuate their monopolistic powers. Some of these multinational companies come from the developed nations. It is indicated that there is a correlation between the military power and the economic power of any given country. It is for these reasons that majority of critics indicating that the multinationals are out to give more political and military power to some of these countries. Such critics also question the need for globalization. They indicate that globalization has led to many negative effects than it was earlier thought. For instance, it has been challenged for increased unemployment and effect on the local businesses. According to Marxist view, the main beneficiaries of globalization have been the developed countries. They indicate that the main reason why it exists is to enable the developed nations accumulate more wealth especially from the developing nations. For instance, the developed nations have been able to take advantag e of the cheap labor provided by the developing nations. While such corporations make a lot of profits, the employees are not rewarded according to the services that are provided. According to my analysis of the situation, I believe that the sub systemic view (critics), best explains the situation in hand. Most of the developing countries still grapple with the issues
